Abstract
Utilities around the world discuss optimal ways to implement Smart Grid Technology in their utilities to improve the reliability and efficiency of their electrical systems. This goal is even more challenging in developing countries where resources are more scarce. This seminar discusses a path to implement Smart Grid technology and in particular what is known as distribution automation. Some examples will be used to illustrate the concepts.
Biography
Dr. Juan M Gers obtained his undergraduate degree as Electrical Engineer from the Universidad del Valle in Cali, Colombia in 1977. In 1981 he finished a Master’s Degree in Power Systems Studies at the University of Salford in England, and his doctorate with research in distribution systems and automatization at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland in 1998. He worked as a substation design engineer, was a professor at the Universidad del Valle in Colombia for more than 20 years, and served as the Vice Minister of Mines and Energy of Colombia in 2002.
GERS is a group with more than 39 years of experience providing consulting services in electrical engineering and associated areas. The group has incorporated companies in the USA, Colombia, Chile, and Mexico. GERS has been involved in the completion of projects of significant sizes and complexity for utilities, oil and gas companies, industrial and commercial facilities in more than 45 countries over the past three decades.
Dr. Gers has also dedicated his time to the academic field and taught various courses related to electrical protections and power system analysis at Penn State and Gonzaga Universities. He is the author of “Distribution System Analysis and Automation,” and co-author of “Protection of Electricity Distribution Networks” published by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) in 2020 and 2011 respectively. Dr. Gers is a Chartered Engineer of the IET and IEEE Senior Member.
