Abstract

This seminar will cover the last 20 years of Distribution Systems Automation Technologies based on my personal Power Industry experience working in different continents. I’ll provide a glimpse of the basic automation schemes with hard wire communication, to most advanced distribution system with Synchro phasors to improve observability of the new energy era. Massive DER – Distributed Energy Resources in the electrical grid and new technical challenges in terms of reliability, safety, resiliency and micro-grids integration will be also covered. Finally, a view of the future of distribution system automation and its role on an energy sustainable planet will be presented.

Biography

Oswaldo (Oswald) Kaschny obtained his B.Sc degree major Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul Brazil in 1980. In 1984 his obtained his M.Sc degree major Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Santa Catarina Brazil.

Mr. Kaschny is currently the vice president of NOJA Power LLC for North America (US, Canada and Caribbean). NOJA Power develops and manufactures state-of-the-art Switchgears, Reclosers and Ground-Mounted Kiosks, with presence in 87 countries and over 50,000 reclosers in operation. Mr. Kaschny has extensive knowledge of over 36 years in Grid Automation, SCADA, EMS, DMS, GIS, OMS systems, Power Generation Automation, Renewables solutions and system integration. He has held many positions in his career from utility electrical engineer / manager to owner of consulting and solutions integration company, covering management, strategy, marketing, prescription, sales, tenders, architecture of solutions, project execution / implementation / start-up, services and technical support.
