Omnified Beamforming for Massive MIMO

Abstract

As one of the key technologies in the 5G communications, massive MIMO promises huge throughput gain and coverage extension through user-specific beamforming. However, the common signals are required to transmit omni-directionally to ensure cell-wide coverage on the public signaling channels. To reduce the coverage gap between the signaling channels and data channels, we propose a semidefinite programming (SDP) based technique to maximize the minimum received power over all directions under the transmit power constraint per antenna. Relying on a small number of beamformers, the proposed scheme can generate a perfectly flat beampattern to ensure reliable omnidirectional transmission with equal transmit-power per antenna. Furthermore, we study the particularly interesting case of uniform rectangular array (URA). We prove that it requires at least three beamforming vectors to achieve constant-power signal transmission at any direction for URA. An optimization algorithm is proposed to obtain the three beamforming vectors that can generate a perfectly flat radiation beampattern. The simulation results validate the superior performance of the proposed scheme over the existing alternatives.

Biography

Yi Jiang received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering and information science from the University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, China, in 2001, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, in 2003 and 2005, respectively.

In 2005, he was a Research Consultant with Information Science Technologies Inc., Fort Collins, CO. From 2005 to 2007, he was a Post-Doctoral Researcher with the University of Colorado, Boulder CO. He moved to San Diego, CA, in 2007, and worked for multiple companies, including NextWave Wireless from 2007 to 2008, Qualcomm Corporate Research and Development from 2008 to 2012, IAA Incorporated from 2012 to 2013, and Silvus Technologies from 2013 to 2016. From 2014 to 2016, he was a part-time Researcher with the Electrical Engineering Department, University of California at Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA. USA. He moved back to China for a professor position at Fudan University in September 2016. He has authored over 50 papers, 8 approved patents, and one book. Many papers are highly cited.
