ECE Professor and Chair Dr. John G. Harris

In his UF career, Dr. Harris has graduated 36 PhD students and 21 MS students. In honor of his 60th birthday, many of his former students organized a Zoom birthday party, gathering together to reminisce and share old photos. One gift to their mentor was to arrange a donation to the Gator Chess Club to be used to run a chess tournament in Dr. Harris’ honor. Tournament details are below. All are welcome to join, regardless of ability. Membership in the U.S. Chess Federation is required.

The 2022 Dr. John G. Harris Chess Championship consists of a three-section, USCF-rated 5-round main tournament and a 7-round USCF-rated blitz tournament in honor of Dr. Harris, who serves as the Gator Chess Club advisor.

The tournament (and its entry fees and $1,450 prize fund) was made possible by a generous donation to the club from former students of Dr. Harris. The tournament has three different sections (Open, Under 1600, and Under 1000/Unrated) to accommodate players of all skill levels. Questions?
