After over two years of development, across academic institutions and industry partners, the NSF Center for Big Learning (CBL) has been officially awarded, creating the first NSF center on deep learning.

Congratulations are in order for Huikai Xie, ECE Florida, just promoted to Fellow of the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE). Dr. Xie is recognized for his achievements in optical MEMS and optical endoscopic imaging.

Dr. Roozbeh Tabrizian has received an NSF CAREER Award for his project, “Active Nano-Acoustic Waveguide Matrix to Tackle Signal Processing Limits: Enabling Wideband and Nonreciprocal Integrated Communication Beyond the UHF.”

Presented as part of ECE Florida’s Distinguished Speaker Series, Trent Jaeger, Professor in the Computer Science and Engineering Department at The Pennsylvania State University, will present “Enforcing Control-Flow Integrity System-Wide,” Thursday, Feb. 1 at 11:45 a.m.

Jun Kyun Choi, professor of electronics engineering at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), will discuss “Open Data Platform for Future Data Eco-society,” Tuesday, Jan. 16 at 2:00 p.m., Larson 234.

NPR’s RadioLab featured Dr. Martin Uman on a Dec. 20 episode, “Big Little Questions.” In the quirky and personal segment, Dr. Uman identifies a strange phenomenon as ball lightning and goes on to describe it as a “well documented mystery.”

The ECE Florida team, comprised of Dr. John Shea and Dr. Tan Wong and their students, placed in the top ten and received a check for $750,000 for their efforts.
